All of us have our own favourite actors, actresses, films and filmi songs. Some of us even love to see actors/actresses in particular roles.

When rediff.com recently invited readers to talk about their favourite films and movie stars, Abhilash Tulasi came up with a list of the best female characters he had seen in Hindi films:

Madhuri Dixit
N Chandra's Tezaab marked the beginning of a new era when Madhuri Dixit caught everybody’s attention with her youthful song Ek do teen. Her terrific performance as Mohini, the exploited stepdaughter, jealous girl and lover brought back meaningful roles for women.

Her performance in Sooraj R Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! can be used as a textbook for all aspiring actresses. She demands attention in every frame. She is all about feminine ada (style). She drove millions crazy with her witty portrayal. This character played a major part in making the actress a superstar.

Her portrayal of the wonderfully scripted role of Janki in Lajja was spell-binding.

As Chandramukhi in Devdas, she ran through a gamut of emotions - love, lust, hope, despair, pain, humility, agony, vigour and strength - with seeming ease.

Juhi Chawla
It is impossible not to fall in love with Juhi Chawla in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Her character Rashmi is all about innocence. Her down-to-earth portrayal remains totally unique.

Bhagyashree
Bhagyashree's beauty and cute dialogue delivery in Sooraj R Barjatya's Maine Pyaar Kiya set standards for the ideal Indian girl. Her submissive sensitivities and the values imbibed in her made Suman a very likeable character.

Sridevi
Sridevi or Pooja in Lamhe was an example of a person who dreams of nothing but the impossible. Her portrayal was beyond time and age.

As Benazir in Khuda Gawah, she was like a real character. Playing an Afghan woman could have been challenging, but she was powerful, and grows on you just like the story does.

Meenakshi Seshadri
Damini, as Meenakshi's character is called in the film of the same name, understands nothing but the language of truth. Her strength to wage a war against injustice comes from inside her. Honest and unselfish motives lead her to victory, as she fights for the cause of a rape victim.

Kajol
If Bhagyashree set standards in Maine Pyaar Kiya, Kajol, as Simran in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayengealso did, in her own way. A strong, yet vulnerable personality, she made her way into the viewers' hearts as naturally as her performance in this film.

In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kajol's Anjali slowly and silently took over the entire film. She transitioned between the two phases in her life with ease and charisma.

Shabana Azmi
Remember 'Badi maje ki hai yeh rajneeti'? That line was uttered by Shabana Azmi (as Rambhi) in Godmother. This rare character spans several phases and often leaves you surprised at her performance.

Rani Mukerji
Playing second fiddle to the protagonists (Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol), yet scoring high with the audience is a rare phenomenon. But Rani Mukerji, as Tina, did it in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. With a well scripted role, Rani was a mixture of glamour and heart and soul.

Manisha Koirala
Manisha's character Shaila Bano, in Mani Ratnam's Bombay, was amazingly life-life. How love dominates the social structure of society, how self-made, ambitious lives built on hard work and hope are torn apart in the name of religion are all conveyed in this film.

Tabu
Have you ever felt the pain Tabu (as Veeran) felt in Gulzar's Maachis? And to the same extent? You will, if you watch this performance for which Tabu received a National Award.

Karisma Kapoor
Karisma's conviction, mission and focus in Fiza is commendable. Unfortunately, there were a few inconsistencies in the character sketch. Still, it is a sincere effort.
