Nazia at rest

The body of Pakistani pop singer Nazia Hassan was laid to rest in London 23 days after her death.

Nazia's family looked pale and drained at the funeral yesterday after weeks of legal wrangling with her 'divorced' husband, Ishtiaq Baig, to settle custody matters.

Nazia, who had been suffering from cancer for about a year, died on August 13.

Pakistan's former caretaker, Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Pakistan's former High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamshul Hasan and family members were among those who attended the last rites.

Nazia, along with her brother Zohaib, sprang into stardom with her Qurbani song, Aap jaisa koyi meri zindagi mein aaye. It was soon followed by another hit, Disco deewane, which took the young generation of the subcontinent by storm.

The London-educated Nazia had also featured in several programmes with her brother for Pakistan TV. Nazia had always said that music was an integral part of her being.
