Rati Agnihotri and Kamal Haasan

1981
A South Indian boy falls in love with a North Indian girl. Their parents object, citing caste differences. After a spell of forced separation, the lovers elope to commit suicide.
Sepia
This Romeo-Juliet story is perhaps the best commentary on the great north-south culture divide in India. But this is not the only reason for the film's phenomenal success. What sends ticket sales through the roof are the scenes of teenage aggression: The girl's mother burns the picture of the boy. The girl mixes the ashes in her tea and drinks it!
Uncut
Rati Agnihotri and Kamal Haasan play the romantic couple. Offscreen, they cannot stand the sight of each other. Yet, in the film, they manage to die for each other. Though this is a Hindi film, it is produced by a South Indian unit.
