The 10 best companies for leadership in Asia

Which businesses most expect their employees to step up and lead? And also nurture them to do so? Global consulting firm Hay Group conducted a study to find out such organisations and also rate them.

It came up with a global list and also ranked companies in each continent. Globally, Procter & Gamble, Microsoft, and General Electric were among the top three companies that motivate leaders throughout the organisation to do their best by giving them opportunity to lead others.

In Asia, Tata Group was the only Indian conglomerate to feature in the list of top Asian companies that are best organisations for leaders.

DHL International is part of DHL Express, which is a market leader in sea and air mail. And DHL Express is a division of German logistics company Deutsche Post DHL.

DHL International’s Asia-Pacific and Emerging Markets headquarters are located in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The Coca-Cola Company manufactures, retails and markets nonalcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups. The company is best known for its flagship product Coca-Cola, invented in 1886 by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in Columbus, Georgia.

Coca-Cola currently offers more than 500 brands in over 200 countries and serves over 1.7 billion servings each day, according to Wikipedia.

IBM is US-based technology and consulting company. It has presence in computer hardware as well as software and also offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

Fortune ranked IBM the No. 2 largest US firm in terms of number of employees (433,362), the fourth 4 largest in terms of market capitalisation, and ninth most profitable company.

Tata Group encompasses seven business sectors - communications and information technology, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals.

The major Tata companies include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages, Titan Industries, and Taj Hotels.

The combined market capitalisation of all the 32 listed Tata companies was $89.88 billion as of March 2012. Tata receives more than 58 per cent of its revenue from outside India, according to Wikipedia.

Unilever is a dual-listed company consisting of Unilever N.V., based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Unilever PLC, based in London, United Kingdom.

Both companies have the same directors and they operate as a single business.

It’s among the three largest consumer goods company and largest manufacturer of ice creams. It owns over 400 brands including Lipton, Sunsilk, Luxand Walls.

Toyota is the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world and eleventh largest company by revenue globally. It employs over 400,000 people and posted 962.1 billion yen in profits in 2013.

Samsung is the largest South Korean business conglomerates. It started out as a trading company in 1938 and later diversified into various businesses including food processing, textiles, insurance, securities and retail. Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s.

The main sources of income for the company as of today are phones and semiconductors.

Samsung has a powerful influence on South Korea's economic development, politics, media and culture.

Its affiliate companies produce around a fifth of South Korea's total exports and the company’s revenue was equal to 17 per cent of the South Korea's $1,082 billion GDP, according to Wikipedia.
