There was a time when the Indian roads had only two vehicles dominating the view, Ambassador and Padmini.

But times changed. Today, buyers are spoiled for choice. Companies are making cars specifically for India.

Honda researched and developed a new diesel engine for India. Nissan revived its Datsun brand to sell affordable cars, the company will launch its cars first in India and then in other global markets. But not all is well with auto makers of late.

As a whole, 2013 has not been the best year for the Indian automobile industry. Society Of Indian Automobile Manufacturers reported that there was a 9.59 per cent drop in automobile sales which can be amounted to roughly 18,07,011 units in 2013 as up against the 19,98,703 units sold in 2012.

With such low sales the last thing an auto manufacturer wants is to have their own fleet competing against each other. To avoid this, auto companies discontinued some cars last year.

One of the widely successful, iconic Maruti 800 ended its celebrated three decade tenure on Indian roads.

The last piece was sent on January 18, 2014 to an Assam dealership. The company probably did not see the point in morphing the vehicle further without changing its core mechanics.

Without fulfilling the prerequisite BSIV norms an average of 400-600 units were sold in last few months.

To keep the memories alive, Maruti launched the Alto 800 lately so that might be a new start in the lineage for the company.

The Zero Engine Noise (Zen) fleet saw its end after its highly acclaimed predecessor, Zen.

Since its launch in 2006, the Zen Estilio failed to contribute significantly to the company’s sales.

Though it shared its engine with the successful Wagon-R, the same formula failed to work for Estilio.

A-star, on the other hand featured a 1.0-litre K Series engine which generated an output of 66bhp.

While it was not a complete disappointment, however the latest launch of the hatchback Celerio, which reported an impressive 14,000 advanced bookings in 14 Days, was the major reason as the company did not want the aged A-star to affect Celerio's sales.

The new car features a 1.0-litre, 12 V KB10, which generates a maximum output of 67bhp while the torque reaches a peak of 90Nm.

The company is trying to keep things interesting by offering Celerio with automatic manual transmission system.

After Maruti Suzuki, next in list is Nissan which shut down production of its two cars. The X-Trail SUV and the 370Z Coupe will no longer be available for sale in the country.

Though the SUV was brought in as CBU (Completely Build Units) till 2010, the company manufactured it as CKD (Completely Knockdown Units) later which helped in reducing prices.

Unfortunately, even that did not help in capturing the customers’ interest. With a terrible figure of 163 units of X-Trail sold last year, it seemed a logical move.

The 370Z Coupe was the bigger disappointment though. It failed to attract even a single buyer since its launch.

Trying to make calculated moves this time around, the company is bringing the next generation Qashqai filling in the SUV gap created by discontinuing the X-Trail. This new vehicle is set to hit the Indian roads by 2015.
