Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda, better known as 'Sam' Pitroda, is an inventor, entrepreneur, technocrat and policymaker of global repute.
Known as the father of India's telecommunications revolution, he is now the chairman of India's National Knowledge Commission.
Pitroda, who first used a telephone after he moved to the United States in the early 60s, brought telephones to some of the world's most isolated regions by focusing on accessibility rather than density.
Apart from being a pioneer in telecom, he has often stood up for food, clean water, sanitation and adequate shelter for the unprivileged sections of India.
Pitroda is the chairman and CEO of World-Tel Limited, an International Telecom Union initiative, and also the founding chairman of a non-profit Foundation for' Revitalization of Local Health Traditions in India. As a result of his pioneering works, he holds more than 50 patents.
