Global payment card brand Visa International would double its debit card business in India from five million to 10 million during the current fiscal, South Asia deputy country manager Uttam Nayak told reporters on Wednesday.
He was speaking at the launch of Vijaya Bank Visa Gold Global Card by Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna in Bangalore.
Nayak said Visa's credit card share during 2001-02 rose to four million units and is expected to grow by 30 per cent in the current fiscal. "The growth will come from tier-two cities like Chandigarh and Cochin for both the credit and debit cards business," he said.
India, he said, had over 140 million savings and current account customers in its private and public sector banks.
