Two farmers allegedly made a bid to commit self immolation during a demonstration in Bangalore on Wednesday, demanding more compensation for land acquired by Bangalore Development Authority, a senior police official said.

"Two farmers, who tried to immolate themsleves during the protest, were prevented from doing so by the timely intervention of police", deputy commissioner of police (North East division), Basavaraj Malagatti told PTI.

About 200 farmers were staging the demonstration on acquisition of land for a layout by BDA, which had given part of it to a private society.

He said approval had already been given to Metropolitan Housing Cooperative Society, comprising IAS and IPS officers, to implement the project and BDA has paid Rs 10 lakhs (Rs 1 million) compensation to each farmer, whose land has been acquired.

"However they are demanding more compensation", he said. The farmers later dispersed after being pacified by police, Malagatti said.
