The remote Himalayan region of Tibet is witnessing impressive economic growth and the region's per capita gross domestic product has touched an all-time high at $997 in 2004, a senior regional leader has said.
The past 40 years have witnessed the fastest social development in Tibet's history, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Regional People's Congress, Legqog said.
The per-capita GDP of Tibet reached $997 in 2004, which was 33 times the amount in 1965, he said on Wednesday in Lhasa, the regional capital.
Tibet has sustained a GDP growth rate of 12.7 per cent for four years in a row, with the total GDP value amounting to $247 million in 2004.
Most Tibetans now live a life with enough food and clothing, he said at a function in Lhasa to express their happiness at the progress over the past 40 years.
