Industrialist L M Thapar dead

Well-known industrialist Lalit Mohan Thapar died at Escorts hospital on Wednesday due to cardiac and renal failure. He was 76.

The head of Ballarpur Industries Limited, who had been admitted to the hospital on Sunday, died at around 10:45 pm, doctors at the hospital said.

The cremation will take place at Lodhi Road crematorium at 2.30 pm on Thursday, family sources said, adding he had been chronically ill since 2001.

The man behind the rise of Thapar Group of Industries, particularly BILT, Thapar took over ownership of The Pioneer newspaper in 1991 and ran it till 1998 when it was handed over to the present management.

A doyen among Indian industrialists, he was known for his generosity, love of life and passion for sport.

The son of Karam Chand Thapar, Lalit Mohan remained a bachelor. BILT is now headed by his nephew Gautam Thapar.
