M Chandrashekharan, who had earlier served as ASG, will be the new ASG for dealing with indirect tax cases while Parag Tripathi will deal with direct tax cases, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said at a press conference in New Delhi.
He, however, made it clear that the government would continue to use the services of Attorney General and Solicitor General as also
the present Additional Solicitor General. "We will continue to use the services of G E Vahanvati and Gopal Subramaniam," he said.
Observing that tax cases no longer remained a small matter, he said it had become 'imperative' to appoint someone familiar with the tax cases in High Courts and in the Supreme Court to take 'complete control' of the situation.
Asked whether the government thought of appointing these two ASGs after reverses in some cases, he said the proposal to appoint two ASGs was in the pipeline for the last seven months and the Union Cabinet cleared the names almost three months ago.
