Tata Motors is gearing up to re-launch its best selling passenger car, Indica, in the United Kingdom under its own brand.

Indica had made its debut on the British roads about two years ago as City Rover under Tata Motors' tie-up with the Birmingham-based MG Rover. The partners had envisaged sales of 100,000 cars over five years.

However, the venture hit a roadblock when Rover, Britain's last major car company, collapsed in April 2005.

"We have gained a lot of experience from the City Rover, which has made us change the vehicle. It also taught us how to do the pricing. When we re-launch, it will be under a Tata brand," Tata Motors managing director Ravi Kant told Business Standard Tuesday.

Tata Motors already has dealers in the UK that retail its utility vehicles and service the Indicas already sold.

For the UK market, Indica had been spruced up quite a bit. Apart from cosmetic changes like a new bumper and grill, it had different engine diagnostics and came with airbags and anti-lock brakes.
