Sensex ends up 24 points at 20,217

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 108 points at 20,301. The index touched a high of 20,324, pared gains and displayed range-bound movement throughout the day.

The index dropped to a low of 20,160 - down 164 points from the day's high - in mid noon deals. The Sensex finally ended with a marginal gain of 24 points at 20,217.

The Nifty closed up 11 points at 6,082. The BSE Smallcap Index soared over 2% (281 points) to 12,623. The BSE Midcap Index was up 0.4% (41 points) at 9442.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,953 stocks traded, 2,067 advanced, 842 declined and 44 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

HDFC Bank gained nearly 3% to Rs 1,750. Wipro moved up 2.5% to Rs 549.

ITC and ICICI Bank rallied nearly 2% each to Rs 203 and Rs 1,242, respectively.

Tata Steel gained 1.5% at Rs 906. Reliance Energy was up over 1% at Rs 2,134.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Tata Motors slipped 2% at Rs 737.

Satyam, Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel declined 1.7% each to Rs 451, Rs 731 and Rs 966, respectively.

Ranbaxy was down 1% at Rs 412.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Essar Oil topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 272.70 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs 225 crore), Reliance (Rs 178.70 70 crore), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 172.80 crore) and Orchid Chemicals (Rs 120 crore).

IKF Technologies led the volume chart with trades of around 2.62 crore shares followed by G V Films (1.95 crore), Himachal Futuristic (1.86 crore), Maars Software (1.70 crore) and Arvind Remedies (1.50 crore).
