The markets closed with marginal gains despite some large caps closing in positive.
Although the markets were trading steady for major part of the day but volatility creeped in during the final hour of trade.
The Sensex closed with gains of 32 points and the Nifty closed up 17 points.
The Sensex closed at 10,162.16 up 32.4 points and the Nifty closed at 2,998 up 17 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,210.80, up 15 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,235.56, up 21 points.
The major gainers on the indices were ITC, HDFC, Tata Steel, Dr Reddys Labs, Suzlon Energy, VSNL, SAIL and Tata Power.
The BSE sectoral indices ended mixed.

The capital goods index closed with a gain of 1.56% at 6,684.74 on account of buying seen in
Lakshmi Machine, Aban LoydChiles, L&T, Carborundum, Bharat Elec, and Siemens.
The BSE Auto Index rose 1.01% at 4,555.56. Hero Honda, Tube Investment, M&M, Tata Motors and Cummins closed higher.
The BSE IT Index was up by 0.86% at 3,627.94. HCL Tech, Mphasis BFL, I-Flex Solution, Moser Baer and Wipro and Satyam moved up.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.55% at 3,067.51. Matrix Lab, Novartis India, Sun Pharma, Aventis Pharma, Aurobindo Pharm closed higher.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index rose 0.5% at 5,074.57. GAIL, HPCL, BPCL and Reliance advanced higher.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index lost 0.5% at 2,617.93. Blue Star, Su-Raj Diamonds and Titan Industries were among the losers.
The BSE FMCG Index was down 0.74% at 1,868.80. Colgate, HLL, Britannia, McDowell and Nirma closed in red.
The BSE Metal Index closed low by 0.86% at 7,976.33. SAIL, Hind Zinc, Jindal Saw and Hindalco witnessed selling.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7504.64 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 32101.07 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2856.6 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 42462.31 crore.

The markets continue to trade strong mirroring the global trend. At 2:12 am the Sensex was trading at 10281 up 151 points and the Nifty was trading at 3036 up 55 points.
About 1308 shares have advanced, 903 shares declined, and 86 shares are unchanged.
All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in green. Capital goods, oil & gas and auto stocks are leading the uptrend.
The major gainers on the indices were Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, Tata Motors, L&T, Suzlon Energy, Dabur India, Mah and Mah and Oriental Bank.
Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 219.00 up 1.27%, Reliance was trading at Rs 1,027.70 up 2.69%, Infosys was trading at Rs 3,012.00 up 1.32%and ITC was trading at Rs 178.10 up 0.39% from its previous close of Rs 177.40.
Sensex @ 1200 hrs
The markets are still trading in steady with sustained buying seen in select index pivotals. At 12:00 pm, the Sensex was trading at 10,237.26 up 107.56 points and the Nifty was trading at 3,020 up 38 points.
About 1293 shares have advanced, 681 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged.
All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in the positive terrain. Capital goods, pharma and auto stocks are witnessing heavy buying interest.
The major gainers on the indices were HDFC Bank, Hero Honda, Tata Motors, Maruti Udyog, Suzlon Energy, Dabur India and Sun Pharma.
Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 218.10 up 0.86%, Reliance was trading at Rs 1,012.55 up 1.17% and Infosys was trading at Rs 3,003.00 up 1.02%.

The markets are stable holding out the gains of early morning trade. At 10:40 am, the Sensex was trading at 10281 up 151 points and the Nifty was trading at 3025 up 45 points.
Asian markets were trading higher and the Nikkei added 1.2%, Straits stands up 1%, Taiwan up 1%, Kospi is up 1.6%, Hang Seng up 1% and in the emerging markets Russia up 1.2% and Brazil gained 1.3%. Dow was up 50 up odd, NASDAQ up 12 odd points ahead of the Fed meeting.
About 910 shares have advanced, 279 shares declined, and 28 shares are unchanged.
The major gainers on the indices were Reliance Comm, ONGC, HDFC, ICICI Bank, VSNL, ABB and TCS.
Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 218.85 up 1.2%, Reliance was trading at Rs 1,016.50 up 1.57%, Infosys was trading at Rs 3,008.50 up 1.2% and ITC was trading at Rs 178.20 up 0.45%.

The markets opened with a significant positive gap in line with the Asian peers, Latin American markets and the Dow. At 9:57 am, the Sensex was up 10279 up 149 points and the Nifty was at 3023 up 41 points.
Asian markets were trading higher and Nikkei added 1.19%.
