"CFL bulbs, which contributed less than one per cent to our lighting business last year, now form 20 per cent of our business. We are committed to ramping up production of CFLs and sell 20 million by Dec 2007," Philips Electronics India lighting division head S Venkataramani said in a statement.
He said in the past five years the company had invested over 400 million Euros in research and development of new energy-efficient lighting solutions. The company has earmarked an advertising budget of Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million) toward its initiatives like 'Bijli Bachao' campaign and other educational activities, the statement said.
Philips had recently tied-up with Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) for Howrah Bridge illumination project and was also working closely with the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in the areas of energy, environment and sustainable development.
CFLs use only 20 per cent of the energy used by an ordinary light bulb and in India around 12,000 MW of power can be saved by using such lamps, it added.
