How many times have you felt the need to make up excuses to explain why you are late to the office? How often have you needed an alibi while you're on the phone, but couldn't find one?

Well, you no longer need 'my aunt's husband's very ill' or 'the dog ate my homework' type of excuses. Help is at hand.

A new software, Simedia SounderCover, that runs on Nokia mobile phones allows you to play background sounds that help you to pretend to be where you are supposed to be, or are not: a hip party, a traffic jam or by the sea. Your voice will be heard on top of the appropriate background noise.

The software, developed by a German company Simedia, works simply yet magically. After having downloaded the programme, when you get a call on your mobile phone, a small window alerts you to whether you would like to play some background sound so as to accord you the power and the pretense to be in a place you are not.

Simedia SounderCover offers nine background noises, like traffic, the grinding of machinery, a storm, et cetera.

Simedia launched this novel software early this year and since then has found it to be a bit hit amongst users. It now also has distribution partners in big mobile markets like China and the United States.

Very soon, say tech wizards, you might be able to fake where you are and what you are wearing, even on videophones.

Even as such software becomes the rage amongst users, companies are trying to find ways to catch lying employees and even cheating husbands. Some mobile phone companies provide users with a service that helps you find out the caller's location.

This will work, till someone develops another software that helps you show you are calling from the moon while you are actually in the bath.

Another United States-based company, SMS.ac, too has launched smsClubs, which help you come up with plausible excuses to hoodwink a doubting spouse or an irate boss.

Recently, the company launched the Alibi and Excuse Club. The club has over 7,500 members. If you are member looking for a great excuse you send an SMS to a given number and receive ideas from members. One of those 7500 ideas is certainly bound to work.
