Mahanagar Gas has revised the price of CNG with effect from July 1 to Rs 20.90 per kg. It is currently sold at Rs 19.77 per kg.

Owing to octroi, the price of CNG in Mira-Bhayander will be Rs 21 and Thane Rs 21.30.

Currently MGL supplies CNG to over 150,000 vehicles in Mumbai, Mira Bhayander and Thane through a network of 108 CNG stations and 524 dispensing points. CNG prices were last revised in April 2002.

The increase in the price of CNG has primarily been caused by the rise in input cost of natural gas from Rs 2,850 per thousand standard cubic metres to Rs 3,200 per thousand standard cubic metres apart from the introduction of new statutory taxes and levies.

The 6.6 per cent hike in CNG price would moderately impact the per kilometre running cost for vehicles - three-wheeler auto rickshaws by 3 paise (Rs 0.03) per km, taxi by 5 paise (Rs 0.05) per km and bus by 32 paise (Rs 0.32) per km. It translates into half a paise per passenger km.

MGL brings clean, safe and affordable piped natural gas direct to over 6,00,000 homes in Mumbai.

The MGL project, which started in 1995 from Chembur has covered major parts of Mumbai through its distribution network i.e. from Dadar to Dahisar and from Sion to Mulund.

MGL has already started work in South Mumbai areas like Prabhadevi, Worli and Colaba.

MGL's compressed natural gas powers 48,450 taxis, 96,213 auto rickshaws, 1578 cars and 90 BEST buses across the Mumbai city.
