Even as the debate on the viability of the ultra mega power projects of 4,000 Mw each continues, their count is likely to go up to nine, with Jharkhand joining the list of states interested in the projects.

The power ministry is looking for a site for a coal pithead project in the state. "The Central Electricity Authority has been instructed to identify a site in Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu," an official told Business Standard.

The site may be finalised within 15 days.

The power ministry feels that Jharkhand can offer an ideal location for such a project in terms of coal and water linkages and land allocation. Though it was open to setting up such a plant in the state, what spurred developments was the state government's communication to the ministry in this connection.

The coal ministry had earlier suggested that the ultra mega power projects be set up in Orissa and Jharkhand, where coal is abundantly available.

Meanwhile, the proposed project at Akaltara in Chhattisgarh may, after all, see the light of day.

Ministry officials are in consultation with the state government, which offered to pay only the variable cost (cost of fuel) for the power allocated to the state, to resolve the issue.

"The Akaltara project site is excellent in terms of fuel linkage and land, as there is minimal rehabilitation and resettlement required. We are hopeful that a consensus will be reached on the issue," the official added.
