India's Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company said on Monday it will launch a sedan version of its lone car model on Wednesday, marking its entry into the mid-size segment.

The Indigo sedan will be offered in three models of petrol and two models of diesel, the company said in a statement.

It did not give price details and company officials were not immediately available for comment.

The petrol version will have an 85 bhp engine while the diesel model will have a turbo-charged engine.

Telco, which is India's top truckmaker, is part of the country's second-largest

conglomerate by sales, the Tata group.

Its Indica hatchback, India's first homegrown car, developed entirely by Telco, has a 23-per cent share in the segment, where it competes with models made by the local units of Suzuki Motor Corp, Hyundai and Fiat.

It had evoked a huge initial customer response when it was launched in early 1999, partly due to its attractive pricing which forced market leader Maruti Udyog, a unit of Suzuki to lower prices.

Telco expects the Indigo sedan to stir the segment in the same way.

The Indigo sedan will be pitted against Hyundai's Accent, Ford's Ikon, Maruti's Esteem and General Motors' Opel Corsa.
