The scheduled meeting of Internet search engine Google's founders and promoters with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was called off late on Monday.

A government spokesperson said that the two officials -- Sergey Brin and Larry Page -- were to meet the prime minister on Monday, but the meeting has been called off.

He did not say why the meeting was called off.

When contacted D Frost, Google spokesperson, said from the US, "They are in India. The founders visit their offices worldwide."

When contacted, Google's head of Bangalore R&D center Krishna Bharat refused to take any query and answer as to why the two officials were meeting the prime minister and whether their visit to India has been called off.

In 1995, Brin and Page developed the Internet application that has become an important tool for searching information on the World Wide Web.

Both of them were named as 2004 fellows of Marconi Foundation at Columbia University, New York, and are among the richest people under the age of 40.
