Google, the search engine major, which opened its R&D unit in Bangalore, has stated that the centre's charter is to innovate, implement and launch new Google technologies and products for a global audience.
The engineering centre will be a full peer to its other such centres at Santa Monica, New York, Zurich and Tokyo and is expected to be staffed with around 100 engineers to develop the next generation search engine.
The engineering team in Google's unit in Bangalore will be working on problems that span many fundamental areas of computer science, including cutting edge information retrieval, distributed systems, machine learning, data mining, theoretical computer science, statistics and user interfaces.
The centre will also deal with algorithms, scalability issues in efficient, reliable access to massive data structures, user interface challenges and a variety of novel search features.
In addition to this R&D centre, Google also has an engineering centre in Hyderabad focussed on software testing.
According to Google, this team will mirror its other engineering offices with the same scope of work. The team at Hyderabad will engage in automated and manual client-side testing and will directly interact with the corporation's Mountain View testing services team on Google products developed all over the world and ensure that their concepts come to fruition.
The mandate for the centre will be to investigate, report and track defects and expand the company's automated test suites.
The focus will be on creating test plans, setting up test environments, developing automated tests, executing and maintaining automated test suites and the analysis of the results. They will also include leading test efforts and exploring new ways of test automation.
Besides R&D and software testing, Google is stepping up its marketing presence in the country by strategically developing and executing localisation efforts as new products and teams are launched globally.
