The government had raised excise duty on petrol and diesel on November 12, December 2, January 2 and January 17 to help it achieve the fiscal deficit target for this year.

The minister further said that as a result of the aforesaid increase the present effective BED rate on unbranded and branded petrol is Rs 8.95 per litre and Rs 10.10 per litre respectively.
