Greater Toronto region of Canada on Thursday invited Indian companies to invest there as the area offered access to the North American Free Trade Area and provided superior infrastructure and skilled workers.

"Toronto is the gateway to NAFTA and Northeastern USA. The region's proximity to the US facilitates provision of nearshore services for American clients," said Karen Campbell, president, Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance.

Campbell, who is leading a high-level delegation to attract Indian investments into the region, said information and communication technology, financial services, contact centres and biotechnology sectors offered great potential for investments.

"Toronto region has the highest concentration of medium and large private ICT companies in Canada and ranks third among the major North American metropolitan areas," he said at a CII function in Chennai.

John Jung, vice-president (international marketing), Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, said Indian IT companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer Services, L&T Infotech and Datamatics, already have presence in the area.

Another advantage is the region's openness to diversity and multiculturalism, he said, adding that 44 per cent of Toronto region's population was born outside Canada.

About 350,000 residents in Toronto are of India origin, which constitute 50 per cent of the total Indian population in Canada, he said.
