US-based ATI Technologies Inc, a $2-billion company engaged in the design and manufacture of 3D graphics and digital media silicon solutions, plans to make a multi-million dollar investment in research and development in India over the next five years.
The company formally opened its research and development centre in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Addressing media persons, Adrian Hartog, ATI's chief technology officer and senior vice-president (consumer business unit), said that the Hyderabad centre for consumer and personal computer business will serve as the company's largest engineering centre outside North America.
He said that the facility would focus on research and development of next-generation audio and digital media products that would help broaden ATI's offerings for consumer electronics devices and PCs.
It would also work on developing chipsets for PCs, cell phones and televisions. The centre is also expected to strengthen ATI's position as industry leader in digital multimedia solutions for all platforms.
"A pool of high quality engineering talent is available in Hyderabad and that's why we have chosen it as the location for our new R&D centre," Hartog said, adding that the company's focus this year would be to hire a 100 of India's top engineers.
ATI Technologies India managing director Dasaradha R Gude said that the new facility would incorporate Hyderabad-based CuTe Solutions, which was acquired in February this year, to broaden its audio and digital media product offering. The company would retain CuTe employees and add more engineering staff to strengthen its team.
Gude pointed out that the Indian PC market was growing at 32 per cent annually while the cellular phone market was expanding at a galloping pace of 175 per cent a year.
Besides, over 10 million televisions were sold in the country in 2004, he said.
