Cell phones to drool over!

February 24, 2009

Toshiba TG01

This is a slick-looking Windows Mobile-based VGA touch screen phone with super-high screen resolution powered by a new, high-performance Qualcomm mobile chipset. It is expected to be available in Europe this summer in two colours -- white and black. The pricing is yet to be announced for this phone, which is expected to take on the iPhone 3G.

Here are some of its more interesting aspects:

The phone, which has a big 4.1-inch touch screen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, will use a finetuned version of the technology found in its Regza line of LCD-TVs.

It will be the first phone to have a 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which is said to be fast and designed to manage power meaning and increase battery life. The technology integrates a 1GHz CPU with support for GPS, Wi-Fi, quad-band 3G networks (with HSDPA/HSUPA data support) and a custom Tosh 3D GUI. The chip also supports high-definition (720p) video decode, 3D graphics (up to 22M triangles/sec), XGA display support, a 12-megapixel camera and mobile broadcast TV.

It is 0.39 inches thick and weighs around 4.5 ounces.

The phone is based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 platform.

You'll be able to shake the phone to answer it.

You'll be able to switch between applications by tilting the phone.

The phone's 1000mAh battery will last 11 days standby time and 5 hours talk time.

The TG01 will have 512MB of ROM and 250MB of RAM, but its micro SDHC slot will support up to 32GB of additional storage.

Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera and Java support.

The TG01 boasts excellent multimedia support. It will play H.263, H.264, MPEG4 and WMV videos, MP3, AAC, AAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WMA and WAV audio files.

Toshiba's TG01 operates with an iPhone-like keypad and will have integrated Flash support, allowing the user to access Flash-based websites. The phone will come with built-in access to Google, YouTube and Facebook.

Though no specific release date, or price, has been mentioned, the Toshiba TG01 is expected hit the market in the first half of 2009.
