An Indian may bag the Economics Nobel this time

September 24, 2008

Paul Samuelson an American neoclassical economist on the occasion of Bhagwati's 70th Birthday said: Jagdish Bhagwati has been a tireless partisan of that globalization which elevates global total-factor----productivities both of richest America and poorest regions of Asia and Africa.

Books published by Prof Bhagwati:

  • 2002: The Wind of the Hundred Days: How Washington Mismanaged Globalization
  • 2004: In Defense of Globalization
  • 2008: Termites in the Trading System: How Preferential Agreements Undermine Free Trade
  • Awards:

  • 2006: Japan's Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star
  • 2004: Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Chamber of Commerce
  • 2000: Padma Vibhushan
  • 1998: Seidman Distinguished Award in International Political Economy
  • 1974: The Indian Econometric Society's Mahalanobis Memorial Medal

Since he is no stranger to controversy, Bhagwati is also known for his opposition to the enforcement of intellectual property rights, such as software copyrights, in countries like India and Brazil, which, he said, protect monopoly rights rather than encourage competition.

He had also spoken out against attaching labour rights and environmental concerns to World Trade Organisation policies.
