The Trinamool Congress on Monday said expressed confidence that West Bengal government would go by the agreement reached to end the Singur impasse and wanted the Tatas to stay in the state.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said it was a "gentleman's agreement" and wondered why the government would violate it.

"Why would the government deviate from the agreement? Do not mislead the people. It is a people's issue," she told reporters in reply to a question.

Mamata, who announced suspension of the two-week-long dharna at Singur small car plant Sunday, said as far as the agreement with the government is concerned the government has decided to provide land  to the maximum within the project area and the rest in adjacent area as early as possible.

She said the Tata Motors statement that it would not resume work at Singur small car plant till there was clarity on the outcome of last night's talks did not concern TC. "No comment. What Tatas have said are not related to us. The agreement was signed between leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee and Industry Minister Nirupam Sen in the presence of the constitutional head (Governor)," she told reporters.

"I want the Tatas to stay here,"  Mamata said in reply to another question.
