Maruti Aug sales falls by 9.19%; Hyundai, 2-wheeler sales up

Country's biggest car maker Maruti Suzuki on Monday reported 9.19 per cent decline in sales during August at 59,908 units as against 65,968 units in the same month last year.

The domestic sales stood at 54,113 units compared to 60,229 units in the same month a year-ago, down by 10.15 per cent, the company said.

Exports, however, grew marginally at 5,795 units as against 5,739 units in the corresponding month last year.

Sales of its once bread and butter model M800 dipped by 32.17 per cent at 3,717 units as against 5,480 units last year.

The A2 segment (comprising Alto, Zen Estilo, Swift and WagonR) sales stood at 37,667 units as against 41,736 units, registering a decline of 9.75 per cent.

The company, however, managed to post a good growth of 12.15 per cent in the A3 segment (consisting of SX4, Swift DZire and Esteem) at 5,427 units as against 4,839 units last year.

Continuing with southward trend, the company's total passenger car sales dipped by 11 per cent to 53,351 units as against 59,944 units last year.

Hyundai sales up: Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Monday reported a 33.91 per cent jump in domestic passenger car sales during August at 21,610 units as against 16,138 units in the corresponding month of 2007.

The company's cumulative sales (including exports) during August were up 57.46 per cent at 44,710 units compared to 28,394 units in the same month a year ago, Hyundai Motor India said.

Its exports for the month accounted for 23,100 units compared to 12,256 units during the same month previous year, a growth of 88.48 per cent.

HMIL sold 38,477 units of hatchbacks Santro, Getz Prime and i10, 6,193 units of Accent and Verna, 37 units of Sonata Embera and 3 units of its SUV Tucson during August.

"Looking at the current market scenario, we are happy with Hyundai overall sales and this again reinforces our belief that if you have a strong product portfolio, it will see you through even in tough times," HMIL Senior Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena said.

In the coming months, the company expected the economic conditions to improve, so that the industry would stabilise, he added.

Bajaj motorcycle sales up 5%: Bajaj Auto on Monday reported a five per cent rise in its motorcycle sales in August at 1,75,274 units against 1,67,483 units in the same month last year.

Total two-wheeler sales during the month was up by four per cent at 1,76,631 units, as against 1,70,203 units in the month under review last year, Bajaj Auto Ltd said.

BAL said its three-wheeler sales during the month stood at 24,324 units as against 25,504 in the Corresponding month last year, down five per cent.

Exports of two and three wheelers during the month went up by three per cent at 2,00,955 units as against 1,95,707 in the same month last year, it added.

The company said it would start production of electric start variant of its 125 cc bike Platina, in keeping with its focus on the 125 cc and above segment.

TVS Motor's two-wheeler sales jump 11.28%: TVS Motor Company also reported a jump of 11.28 per cent in its total two-wheeler sales, during August at 1,14,321 units compared to 1,02,734 units for the same month last year.

During the month, motorcycle sales stood at 52,304 units as against 46,235 units last year, registering a growth of 13.13 per cent, TVS Motor said.

The sales in the scooter segment jumped by 3.03 per cent to 25,392 units, compared to 24,645 units in August 2007, it added.

Exports of the company rose by 50.62 per cent to 18,083 units in August as against 12,006 units in the corresponding period a year-ago.

"Sales witnessed a quantum increase with notable contributions across models including the fuel injected Apache RTR FI, which the company launched in July," the statement said.
