At present, all traffic is routed through the narrow and congested 'chicken neck' corridor via the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal.
Ramesh said after the completion of the project in 2012, Mizoram would become a hub of international trade.
The project is expected to give a huge boost to the economic activities in the landlocked northeastern states.
