Sensex up 99 points; HDFC gains 5.6%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 138 points at 16,454, and soon touched a days high of 16,540 in early trades.

However, the index pared gains in the afternoon trades and drop to a low of 16,315.

The index finally ended with a gain of 99 points at 16,415.

The market breadth was negative - out of 2,767 stocks traded, 1,008 advanced, 1,701 declined and 58 were unchanged on Friday.

The NSE Nifty finished with a gain of 35 points at 4,870.

The index movers. . .

HDFC soared 5.6% to Rs 2,569. Ranbaxy surged 4.7% to Rs 529. BHEL gained 3.9% at Rs 1,662.

Infosys moved up 3.6% to Rs 1,957, and TCS was up 3.4% at Rs 1,029.

Larsen & Toubro advanced 3.2% to Rs 2,981. HDFC Bank gained 2.5% to Rs 1,358.

Bharti Airtel was up over 2% to Rs 876, while Hindalco and ONGC added 1.2% each to Rs 192 and Rs 864, respectively.

ACC and Tata Steel were up 0.8% at Rs 661 and Rs 903, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates plunged 5.4% to Rs 213. Ambuja Cements tumbled 2.7% at Rs 95.

Reliance was trading at Rs 2,402 - down 2.3%. Mahindra and Mahindra declined 2.3% to Rs 592.

SBI slipped 1.4% to Rs 1,433, and Reliance Infrastructure dropped 1.2% to Rs 1,231.

ICICI Bank shed 1.1% at Rs 788. Tata Motors, Cipla and Wipro were down around 1% each at Rs 577, Rs 212 and Rs 508, respectively.

Most Active Counters

Reliance Power led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 354.21 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 290.11 crore), Larsen & Toubro (Rs 224.07 crore), Piramal Life Sciences (169.61 crore) and IFCI (Rs 166.31 crore).

IFCI topped the volume chart with trades of around 2.62 crore shares followed by Reliance Power (1.44 crore), Spice Telecom (1.35 crore), Ispat Industries (1.21 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources (88 lakh).
