And, most likely, the next Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize.
Yet, for all his awesome accomplishments, Professor Jagdish N Bhagwati remains his humble self, never mind that governments and organizations across the world constantly seek his advice.
An ardent advocate of free trade, it was his path that India followed in 1991. In recognition of this as well his global stature, India conferred the Padma Vibhushan on him in 2000. Acknowledging his contribution, India Abroad, the oldest Indian-American newsweekly which Rediff.com owns in the US and Canada, conferred on him and his wife, Professor Padma Desai, its Lifetime Achievement Award for 2007.
Professor Bhagwati, who is in India to attend the awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday where Professor Desai will be awarded the Padma Bhushan and to deliver a lecture in Goa, has kindly consented to appear on the Rediff Chat. A rare opportunity to interact with one of the great minds of our time.
What has India done to deserve its mounting inflation and food crisis? How can the world tackle the recession, which some economists warn will rival the Great Depression of the 1930s? Will globalization be affected? How can individuals protect themselves from the onslaught? Will India's reforms process go for a toss? Here's your unique chance to have these and other questions answered by a master of his game.
Join Professor Jagdish Bhagwati on the Rediff Chat, May 9, 2008, at 3.30 pm IST.
