The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 282 points at 17,504. Considerable buying support saw the index move higher as the day progressed.
The index zoomed to an intra-day high of 18,406 towards the closing bell.
The Sensex finally ended with a record gain of 1,140 points (6.6%) at 18,362 - the first-ever, four-digit single day gain for the index.
The Nifty gained 350 points to close at 5,383.
The index, however, ended the week on a negative note - down 652 points (3.4%).
The market breadth was positive - out of 2,758 stocks traded, 1,561 advanced, 1,161 declined and 36 were unchanged today.

No losers in index stocks
All the Sensex stocks rallied today with 29 of the 30 scrips advancing over 2% each.
Hindalco zoomed 14% to Rs 173. Reliance Energy soared nearly 12% to Rs 2,030.
ICICI Bank surged over 11% to Rs 1,259. Larsen & Toubro rallied 10% to Rs 3,890.
NTPC and Bajaj Auto soared over 9% each to Rs 222 and Rs 2,300, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and ONGC advanced over 7.5% each to Rs 674, Rs 712 and Rs 1,015, respectively.
Bharti Airtel, Infosys and Reliance Communications rallied over 7% each to Rs 915, Rs 1,521 and Rs 668, respectively.
Tata Steel, HDFC Bank and Hindustan Unilever gained 6.3% each at Rs 714, Rs 1,601 and Rs 199, respectively.
Ranbaxy and DLF moved up around 6% each to Rs 368 and Rs 945, respectively.
ITC advanced over 5% to Rs 198. Grasim, Reliance and ACC added 4.7% each to Rs 3,033, Rs 2,610 and Rs 788, respectively.
Cipla, TCS and HDFC rallied around 4.5% each at Rs 183, Rs 882 and Rs 2,729, respectively.
Wipro and Maruti were up over 4% each to Rs 429 and Rs 830, respectively.
Most active counters
Reliance Capital topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 255.70 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs 207.80 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 199.75 crore), GMR Infrastructure (Rs 179.20 crore) and Reliance (Rs 158.80 crore).
Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 1.43 crore shares followed by Ispat Industries (1.41 crore), IFCI (1.08 crore), GMR Infrastructure (99.65 lakh) and Reliance Petroleum (90.55 lakh).
