Highest paid CEOs in the US

Meg Whitman was fourth on the 2007 list with a salary of $120 million, including $116 million in stock options. She was the president and CEO of eBay from March 1998 to March 2008.

According to Forbes magazine, Whitman was worth an estimated $1.4 billion in 2007. She has also figured in the list of the world's most influential people by Time magazine. Whitman was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of eBay.

In the S&P 500, however, increases in CEO pay outstrip director pay rises. S&P 500 directors received a median increase in total compensation of 10.9 per cent, while they awarded their CEO colleagues an increase of 22 per cent, The Corporate Library study says.
