The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 69 points at 16,969, and soon crossed the 17,000-mark in opening trades. Renewed buying in technology stocks helped the index rally to a fresh all-time intra-day high of 17,074.
Some profit taking towards the end, saw the index slip into red to 16,887 - down 187 points from the day's high. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 22 points at 16,921.
The Nifty ended at 4,941, up 2 points.
The market breadth was positive - out of 2,815 stocks traded, 1,492 advanced, 1,262 declined and 61 were unchanged today.
Index Movers...
Satyam zoomed 4.8% to Rs 431. Wipro soared 4.3% to Rs 455. TCS surged nearly 4% to Rs 1,041, and Infosys added 3% to Rs 1,824.
HDFC rallied 3.5% to Rs 2,477. ICICI Bank advanced 3% to Rs 1,019, and SBI gained 2.5% at Rs 1,848.
Tata Steel and Cipla were the other major gainers.
...And The Shakers
Reliance Energy plunged 5.6% to Rs 1,026. Reliance and Maruti tumbled around 3% each to Rs 2,322 and Rs 962, respectively.
NTPC shed 2% at Rs 192. HDFC Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hindalco slipped around 1.5% each to Rs 1,375, Rs 752 and Rs 165, respectively.
ITC was down over 1% at Rs 185.
Value & Volume Toppers
Praj Industries topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 387.25 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 274.50 crore), Tata Tele (Rs 233.30 crore), Indiabulls Real Estate (Rs 229 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 214 crore).
Tata Tele led the volume chart with trades of around 5.32 crore shares followed by Himachal Futuristic (3.42 crore), Ispat Industries (2.38 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (2.29 crore) and MRPL (2.14 crore).
