Aggressive buying in select stocks saw the index zoom past the 19,000-mark to a new all-time intra-day high of 19,199 - up 483 points from the previous close.
Profit-taking in noon trades saw the index pare gains and slip into negative zone. The intensity of selling increased towards the closing bell, and the index tumbled all the way to a low of 17,771 - down 1,428 points from the day's high.
The Sensex finally ended with a hefty loss of 717 points (3.8%) at 17,998 - the second biggest single-day loss for the index.
The Nifty lost 208 points to close at 5,351.

The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,824 stocks traded 1,721 declined, 1,049 advanced and 54 were unchanged today.
INDEX DRAGGERS...
ACC plunged 14% to Rs 1,036.
Reliance Energy tumbled nearly 10% to Rs 1,591. SBI dropped over 8% to Rs 1,677.
Bharti Airtel slumped 7.7% to Rs 1,019. ICICI Bank shed 7% to Rs 1,039.
NTPC, Hindalco and HDFC Bank dropped 5.5% each to Rs 209, Rs 187 and Rs 1,379, respectively.
BHEL and Larsen & Toubro slipped 4.4% each to Rs 2,182 and Rs 3,150, respectively.
Reliance declined over 4% to Rs 2,576. Tata Steel shed 3.8% to Rs 836.
Reliance Communications dropped 3.5% to Rs 711. ONGC, Grasim, Ambuja Cements, Tata Motors and HDFC were down 3% each to Rs 1,093, Rs 3,591, Rs 144, Rs 784 and Rs 2,395, respectively.
...AND THE MOVERS
TCS and Wipro rallied over 2% each to Rs 1,119 and Rs 496, respectively. Satyam gained over 1% to Rs 463.
Cipla suged 1.8% to Rs 183, and Dr.Reddy's added 1% to Rs 613.
MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 714.60 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs 627.55 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 626.50 crore), Power Grid (Rs 514 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 482.70 crore).
Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 4.78 crore shares followed by Power Grid (3.59 crore), Tata Teleservices (3 crore), Reliance Petroleum (2.34 crore) and IFCI (1.14 crore).
