Sensex ends at a new high of 18,814

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 39 points at 18,697. Volatility in morning trades (mainly on account of weakness in technology stocks) saw the index drop to a low of 18,537 - down 160 points from the day's open.

Steady buying in other sectors like auto, capital goods and metals helped the index rally in late noon deals to an all-time, intra-day high of 18,833 - up 296 points from the day's low.

The Sensex finally ended, close to the day's high, at a record 18,814 - up 156 points from the previous close.

The Nifty gained 83 points to close at 5,525.

The BSE PSU index soared over 3% to 10,726. The Auto, Capital Goods, Metal and Realty indices surged 2.7% each to 5604, 17,088, 14,833 and 10,214, respectively. The IT index slumped 5.5% to 4767.

The market breadth was a tad negative - out of 2,804 stocks traded, 1,374 declined, 1,359 advanced and 71 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

Mahindra & Mahindra zoomed nearly 8% to Rs 814, and ONGC soared nearly 6% to Rs 1,066.

Grasim and BHEL surged around 4% each to Rs 3,800 and Rs 2,421, respectively.

ACC and Larsen & Toubro gained 3.5% each at Rs 1,260 and Rs 3,487, respectively.

Hindalco, Tata Motors and ITC rallied over 3% each to Rs 176, Rs 830 and Rs 190, respectively.

HDFC Bank advanced 2.5% to Rs 1,456. Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel added over 2% each to Rs 741 and Rs 1,096, respectively.

ICICI Bank rallied 2% to Rs 1,090. NTPC moved up 1.8% to Rs 222.

Maruti and Ranbaxy were up around 1.5% each at Rs 1,119 and Rs 431, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Satyam slumped 7.5% to Rs 448. Infosys plunged 7% to Rs 1,976. TCS dropped 4.7% to Rs 1,072, and Wipro shed 3% to Rs 488.

Cipla slipped over 1% to Rs 191.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 604.80 crore followed by Power Grid (Rs 577.40 crore), Infosys (Rs 483.50 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 386.50 crore) and Reliance Communications (Rs 337 crore).

Power Grid led the volume chart with trades of around 5.22 crore shares followed by Reliance Natural Resources (2.11 crore), IFCI (2 crore), Reliance Petro (Rs 1.73 crore) and Ispat Industries (1.24 crore).
