The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore said on Wednesday that it had received a circular from the HRD ministry stating that it would review the functioning of all the IIMs in the country.

"The setting up of a review committee is not a new move. Review committees had been set up earlier, once under the chairmanship of H P Nanada and the second one under Dr V Kurien," Director of IIM-B, Nagadevara said today.

However, there has been a huge gap of nearly 15-20 years between the last review committee and this one, he said while refusing to comment whether the move to set up a review committee was prompted by the delay by the IIMs to implement the quota system during admission.

Various developments had taken place in the last 15-20 years and to assess whether the IIMs had kept pace with the changing times, could perhaps be one of the reasons behind the step taken by the government, he opined.

"There is nothing to be worried about," he said adding that the suggestions of the review committee would enable the IIMs to "formulate their future strategy" and to ensure that they were moving in the right direction.

The review committee, headed by former Maruti Udyog Chairman R C Bhargava, will assess the existing courses offered by IIMs and suggest guidelines.

The committee will also review the expansion plans of the IIMs and the corpus fund in each institute. It will suggest measures for easy availability of education loans, fellowships and financial assistance to students, among other things.
