Sensex ends down 32 points, Rel Energy zooms 5%

The Sensex opened a tad higher at 14,509 - up 10 points. Aggressive buying in power and banking stocks saw the index rally to a high of 14,560.

The index dropped to a low of 14,442 - down 118 points from the day's high - on selling in Reliance and Tata Steel. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 32 points at 14,467.

The market breadth was neutral - out of 2,640 stocks traded, 1,273 advanced, 1,281 declined and 86 were unchanged today.

A MIXED BAG

Reliance Energy zoomed over 5% to Rs 590. Hindalco gained nearly 2% to Rs 170.

NTPC and HDFC rallied 1.7% each to Rs 153 and Rs 1,880, respectively.

Hero Honda and HLL moved up over 1% each to Rs 670 and Rs 192, respectively.

BHEL and Gujarat Ambuja plunged nearly 3% each to Rs 1,440 and Rs 116, respectively.

Reliance and Tata Steel dropped over 1.5% each to Rs 1,704 and Rs 599, respectively.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

TCS topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 562 crore followed by Time Technoplast (Rs 163.20 crore), Reliance (Rs 147.40 crore), Educomp (Rs 144.50 crore) and SBI (Rs 135.70 crore).

Reliance Natural led the volume chart with trades of around 1.10 crore shares followed by IKF Technologies (99.50 lakh), IDBI (80 lakh), TCS (49.30 lakh) and IFCI (48 lakh).
