Sensex ends up 58 points at 19,796

The Sensex opened with a bang above the 20,000-mark at 20,018 - up 280 points - on the back of positive cues from the overseas markets. The index soon touched a high of 20,064.

Profit-taking at higher levels saw the index pare gains in noon deals. A fresh round of selling in closing trades saw the index slip to a low of 19,717 - down 347 points from the day's high.

The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 58 points at 19,796. The Nifty gained 15 points to close at 5,955.

The NSE Nifty touched a new all-time intra-day high of 6,027, and finally ended with a gain of 15 points at record 5,955.

The realty index zoomed 4.8% to 11,475. The Bankex and the IT index were up 1% each at 11,128 and 4271, respectively.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,882 stocks traded, 1,737 advanced, 1,102 declined and 43 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

Cipla zoomed nearly 5% to Rs 199. ICICI Bank and Reliance Energy gained over 3% each to Rs 1,199 and Rs 1,946, respectively.

HDFC moved up 2.6% to Rs 2,813. Bharti Airtel advanced 2.3% to Rs 940, and Infosys rallied 2% to Rs 1,635.

DLF was up 1.7% at Rs 971. Mahindra & Mahindra and Ranbaxy were the other major gainers at Rs 785 and Rs 398, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Hindalco and Grasim dropped 3% each to Rs 193 and Rs 3,680, respectively.

Bajaj Auto and HDFC Bank shed 2.5% each at Rs 2,728 and Rs 1,686, respectively.

Tata Steel slipped over 2% to Rs 847. BHEL declined 1.3% to Rs 2,785.

ONGC and Wipro were down over 1% each at Rs 1,192 and Rs 493, respectively.

 VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance Petroleum topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 498 crore followed by Ispat Industries (Rs 416 crore), Reliance Energy (Rs 307 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (252 crore) and Unitech (Rs 184 crore).

Ispat Industries led the volume chart with trades of around 5.69 crore shares followed by Reliance Petroleum (2.16 crore), Tata Teleservices (2.12 crore), Chambal Fertilisers (1.77 crore) and IKF Technologies (1.74 crore).
