Former Supreme Court judge B N Srikrishna has been appointed the chairman of the Sixth Pay Commission. Justice Srikrishna retired on May 21, 2006 as a Supreme Court judge.
The United Progressive Alliance government is likely to announce the names of the other four members of the pay panel by Monday. The prime minister has to approve the four members of the commission.
The government will also release a formal notification listing the terms and references of the commission soon. The 6th Pay Commission is expected to file its report by 2007-end.
The Chief Justice of India Y K Sabharwal on Thursday gave his approval to Justice Srikrishna to head the pay panel. Conventionally, the chief justice is consulted before any judge is appointed to head a commission.
Justice Srikrishna is a Sanskrit scholar and had also heard the Mumbai blast case.
The 5th Pay Commission was headed by Justice Rathnavel Pandian.
