Swedish telecom major Ericsson has expanded its research and development activities in Chennai by opening a new facility.
The facility will focus on developing charging solutions and value-added solutions for the pre-paid and multimedia segments.
The company has been carrying out R&D activities in Chennai since February 2006 from a temporary facility. The new facility will do cutting edge research work in multimedia.
The facility was inaugurated on Monday by Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran. Currently, the company employs over 50 professionals in Chennai for R&D.
The company has also set up a global services delivery centre in Chennai to cater to the needs of its global clients.
Mats Granryd, managing director, Ericsson India said the Chennai R&D facility would hire more people depending on global and domestic needs.
He declined to disclose the number. At present, Ericsson India R&D employs over 100 people, in Chennai and Gurgaon.
He added that Ericsson had committed to invest over $100 million per annum in the next few years in India.
Answering a question, Granryd said the company would also explore the possibility of putting up a manufacturing facility in Chennai. It has a manufacturing facility in Rajasthan to make mobile base stations and switches.
Ericsson has identified multimedia in the telecom sector as a potential area and has formed a separate business unit to focus on multimedia services.
