Renewed buying in heavyweights, specially Reliance, saw the index zoom to a high of 13,051 towards the closing bell.
The Sensex finally closed on a firm note with a gain of 71 points at 13,033.
All the sectoral indices largely finished with gains. The BSE Oil & Gas Index advanced 1.5% (93 points) to 6138. The BSE FMCG Index was up 0.8% (16 points) at 2065. The BSE Teck Index was up 0.8% (25 points) to 3296. The BSE Capital Goods Index was also up 0.8% (73 points) at 8738.
Advances were marginally ahead of declines - out of 2,590 scrips traded, 1,267 advanced, 1,249 declined and 74 were unchanged today.
INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS
The rally was led by Reliance on the back of bullish news reports.
The company said in the morning that the board will meet on November 9 to consider a proposal to raise up to $2 billion via bonds/FCCBs.
Later, the company announced plans to hike investment in the KG basin to over $5.2 billion and nearly doubled estimates of gas reserves in the basin.
The stock touched a life-time high of Rs 1,268 before closing with a gain of over 3% (Rs 38) at Rs 1,264.
Reliance Communications gained over 2% (Rs 10) to Rs 389. Bharti also gained 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 541.
SBI moved up nearly 2% (Rs 21) to Rs 1,116.
Cement scrips logged gains on reports that companies had hiked prices in Mumbai. Grasim added Rs 19 to Rs 2,767. While ACC was up Rs 11 at Rs 979, Gujarat Ambuja was up Rs 2 at Rs 119.
BHEL gained Rs 44 to Rs 2,459. Infosys was up Rs 9 at Rs 2,104. ITC, Hindalco, Tata Motors and Hero Honda also moved up today.
HDFC slipped nearly 3% (Rs 42) to Rs 1,428. ONGC was down Rs 12 at Rs 804.
MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS
Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 292 crore followed by Mcdowell (Rs 133 crore), Tech Mahindra (Rs 128 crore), Hindustan Zinc (Rs 107 crore) and Alstom Projects (Rs 79 crore).
