India only Asian market to gain; Sensex up 52 pts

The markets bounced back to close in the green amidst the highly volatile session. The Sensex bounced back almost 500 points from the day's low, closing with gains of over 52 points at 11874. Nifty closed at 3523 up 20 points.

  • India is the only Asian market to close in green.
  • The BSE Midcap closed at 5,699.66 down 1.32%.
  • The BSE Smallcap closed at 7,335.92 down 1.79%.

The market breadth was negative, about 641 shares have advanced, 1807 shares declined, and 37 shares are unchanged.

Heavyweights select cement and FMCG stocks provided support to the market during the day.

ACC, Guj Ambuja Cements, BHEL, Bajaj Auto, Reliance, HLL, and Dabur India were among the top gainers on the indices.

The major losers on the indices were Tata Power, Tata Steel, L&T, Hero Honda, PNB, Oriental Bank and Tata Chemicals.

The BSE indices closed mix. FMCG stocks like Dabur India, HLL, Colgate and ITC witnessed buying at the bourses. The BSE FMCG Index climbed 1.13% to close at 2,197.42.

The BSE Auto Index gained 0.8% at 5,508.10. Stocks like SAIL, Hindalco, Sesa Goa, Nalco and JSW Steel closed in the green.

The BSE Oil & gas Index closed up 0.67% at 5,727.19 amid gains were seen in Reliance, IOC and GAIL.

Technology stocks like HCL Tech, Moser Baer, Satyam, Infosys closed lower. The BSE IT Index lost 0.23% at 4,012.

As the prices on the LME recovered the pressure on the index went down. However, metal stocks like Hind Zinc, JindalStainless, Jindal Saw, Guj NRE Coke, Sterlite Ind and Tata Steel slipped.

The BSE Metal Index closed down 0.52% at 9,885.86.

The BSE Healthcare Index was also closed in red its down 0.93% at 3,874.87 as selling was seen in FDC, Orchid Chemical, Glenmark, Divis Labs and Aurobindo Pharm.

The BSE Bankex Index was down 1.03%. Stocks like PNB, Oriental Bank, IOB, UTI Bank, Canara Bank and ICICI Bank tumbled on the bourses.

Selling pressure was also seen in capital goods and consumer durables stocks. The NSE cash turnover stood at Rs 11,093.69 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was Rs 43,454.15 crore. The BSE cash turnover stood at Rs 52,58.87 crore. The total market turnover was Rs 59,806.71 crore.

On the corporate front, Cement companies decided not to hike prices further and to cut prices by 5% for Govt supplies.

Wipro has acquired US-based Mechanical Design company Quantech for $10 million.

Infosys may go in for a $ 200 million US acquisition.

Mercator Lines plans to foray into upstream oil segment.

Shell is eyeing stake in OIL, ONGC blocks.

Sensex @ 1500

The Sensex and is now down 173 points at 11,649. The index had earlier touched a high of 11,878, before slipping to a low of 11,379.

The NSE Nifty is down 2 points at 3501.

Gujarat Ambuja has zoomed 5% to Rs 106. ACC has surged 2.6% to Rs 884. HLL has rallied 2% to Rs 270, and Dr Reddy's has gained 1.6% at Rs 1,620.

Tata Power has plunged nearly 7% to Rs 530. Tata Steel has dropped 5.4% to Rs 554, and Hindalco has shed 3% to Rs 204.

Larsen & Toubro has tumbled 5% to Rs 2,575. BHEL is down 3% at Rs 2,186.

The market breadth continues to remain negative - out of 2,507 stocks traded so far, 2,062 have declined, 403 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.

Sensex @ 1420

The markets have shown some recovery from lower levels. The BSE Sensex is down 210 points at 11611. The NSE Nifty is trading at 3444 down 58 points. Stocks from the metal sector continue to witness heavy selling.

The markets are largely mirroring the trend in the Asian and other emerging markets and the sharp fall in global commodity prices has triggered the fall.

The market breadth is negative, about 377 shares have advanced, 1999 shares declined, and 38 shares are unchanged.

Stocks from the metal sector continue to witness heavy selling. The BSE metal index is down nearly 6%.

Stocks from pharma, banking and auto sector are also among the major laggards.

The major losers on the indices are Tata Steel, Cipla, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Bhel, L&T, Bharti, ICICI Bank, Dr Reddy's, Nalco, GSK and Hero Honda.

Select cement and FMCG stocks are providing support at the lower levels. Guj Ambuja Cements, Reliance, HLL, ACC, Dabur India are among the top gainers on the indices.

Sensex at 1330

Recovery continues on Dalal Street. The Sensex is now down 154 points at 11,668. The index had earlier touched a high of 11,878, before slipping to a low of 11,379.

The NSE Nifty is down 33 points at 3470.

Gujarat Ambuja has surged 2.7% to Rs 104. Reliance and HLL are the other notable gainers among the Sensex stocks.

Tata Steel has dropped 6.5% to Rs 548. Hindalco has tumbled over 3% to Rs 203.

Reliance Energy has slumped 4% to Rs 563. Tata Power has shed nearly 4% to Rs 547, and NTPC is down nearly 3% at Rs 126.  Larsen & Toubro has plunged 3.7% to Rs 2,610.

Out of 2,440 stocks traded so far, 2,067 have declined, 333 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.

Sensex @ 1240

The Sensex tumbled to a low of 11,379, down 499 points from the day's high of 11,878. The index is now down 283 points at 11,539.

The NSE Nifty is down 74 points at 3429.

Tata Steel has plunged 9% to Rs 533. Hindalco has shed 6.7% to Rs 196.

Reliance Energy has slumped 6.4% to Rs 549. NTPC has shed 5.4% to Rs 122, and Tata Power is down 4% at Rs 546.

Larsen & Toubro has plunged over 6% to Rs 2,540. BHEL is down nearly 5% at Rs 2,145.

Grasim has slumped 6% to Rs 2,000. Cipla has tumbled 5.3% to Rs 252.  Out of 2,358 stocks traded so far, 2,075 have declined, 246 have advanced and 37 are unchanged.

Sensex @ 11.45

The markets seems to be falling more and more. At 11.45 a.m., the Sensex is down nearly 382 points at 11,440.

The Nifty is down 104 points at 3399.

Cipla has plunged 4.5% to Rs 254. Tata Steel has shed 4.2% to Rs 561, and Hindalco has dropped 3.5% to Rs 203.

Tata Power and Reliance Energy has tumbled over 3% each to Rs 550 and Rs 568, respectively. NTPC is down 2.5% at Rs 126.

Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, ONGC and HDFC have slipped 2.5% each to Rs 2,634, Rs 393, Rs 1,333 and Rs 1,325, respectively.

Sensex @ 11.00

After a brief pause, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark sensitive index continued its downward march by losing over 169 points in early trading today on sustained selling by funds.

The Sensex, which had suffered its third biggest fall of 463 points on Monday, opened slightly higher at 11,861.18 points but rolled down by 169.75 points at 11,652.45 in early trading.

Similarly, the Nifty index on the wide-based National Stock Exchange lost 46.90 points at 3456.05.

The major losers were Hero Honda,  BHEL, Dr Reddy, HDFC, Bajaj Auto, Cipla, HDFC Bank and Larsen and Toubro.

However, the market witnessed a revival of buying in cement segment stocks as most of the shares opened in positive zone.

Sensex @ 10.10

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 39 points at 11,861.

However, selling soon emerged and the index plunged into the negative zone. The index is now down 73 points at 11,749.

The NSE Nifty is down 15 points at 3489.
