Mirroring the weak trend in the global markets the Sensex opened with a negative gap of 34 points at 12,401. Heavy all-round selling in the opening deals saw the index tumble to a low of 12,224 - down 211 points from its previous close.
The index, thereafter, staged a smart recovery as it touched a high of 12,422. However, a fresh round of heavy selling towards the end saw the index tumble back to lower levels.
The Sensex finally settled with a significant loss of 1.2% (150 points) at 12,285.
The NSE Nifty meanwhile shed 51 points to close at 3650 points.
The BSE Oil & Gas index plunged over 3% to 5,946. The Bankex dropped 2.2% to 5,624, and PSU index shed 1.7% at 6,347. The FMCG index was down 1% at 2,263.
Sensex @ 1500 hrs
A fresh round of heavy selling has forced the Sensex slip to lower levels. The index is now down 163 points at 12,272. Gujarat Ambuja has slumped 8% to Rs 106. ACC has plunged over 7% to Rs 897, and Grasim has slipped over 2% to Rs 2,255.
Reliance has plunged over 4% to Rs 1,063. ONGC has dropped 3% to Rs 1,414. ICICI Bank has declined 3.7% to Rs 636, and SBI is down 1.7% at Rs 960.
Larsen & Toubro has surged over 2% to Rs 2,835. NTPC has moved up 1.6% to Rs 131.
Dr.Reddy's, Tata Motors and Hero Honda are up 1% each at Rs 1,649, Rs 965 and Rs 880, respectively.
The market breadth is fairly negative. Out of 2,602 stocks traded so far, 1,498 have declined, 1,042 have advanced and 62 are unchanged.

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 34 points at 12,401. The index soon plunged to a low of 12,224 - down 211 points from its previous close.
The index is now down 67 points at 12,368.
The NSE Nifty is down 34 points at 3667.
Cement stocks have posted huge losses following reports that price controls would be introduced from Monday. Gujarat Ambuja has slumped 6% to Rs 108. ACC has plunged 5.3% to Rs 914, and Grasim has dropped 3.3% to Rs 2,228.
ICICI Bank has declined 2.6% to Rs 643. SBI has slipped 1.2% to Rs 965.
Reliance has plunged 2.5% to Rs 1,081. ONGC has dropped 1.8% to Rs 1,432. Larsen & Toubro has surged 2.5% to Rs 2,846. NTPC has added 1.3% to Rs 131.
Tata Motors has rallied nearly 2% to Rs 972. Tata Steel has gained 1.8% at Rs 650, and Hindalco is up 1% at Rs 246. Out of 2,555 stocks traded so far, 1,349 have declined, 1,147 have advanced and 59 are unchanged.
Reliance continues to top the value chart with a turnover of Rs 190.83 crore followed by Reliance Petro (Rs 108.90 crore), ACC (Rs 94.82 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 92.63 crore) and Reliance Communication Ventures (Rs 68.82 crore).
Reliance Petro continues to lead the volume chart with trades of around 1.27 crore shares followed by Lloyd Steel (83.11 lakh), IFCI (78.60 lakh), Kamdhenu Ispat (72.28 lakh) and G V Films (34.33 lakh).

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 34 points at 12,401. The index soon plunged to a low of 12,224 - down 211 points from its previous close.
The index is now down 54 points at 12,382.
The NSE Nifty is down 18 points at 3684.
ICICI Bank has shed 3% to Rs 641. HDFC Bank and HDFC have slipped over 1% each to Rs 860 and Rs 1,374, respectively. ACC and Gujarat Ambuja have dropped nearly 2% each to Rs 949 and Rs 113, respectively. Reliance is down 1.6% at Rs 1,091. ONGC is down nearly 1% at Rs 1,446. Tata Steel has surged 2.6% to Rs 655. Hindalco has moved up 1.8% to Rs 248. Tata Motors has advanced 2.3% to Rs 977. Hero Honda, Maruti and Bajaj Auto are up 1% each at Rs 880, Rs 946 and Rs 3,175, respectively. NTPC has surged 1.5% to Rs 131. Out of 2,487 stocks traded so far, 1,262 have advanced, 1,166 have advanced and 59 are unchanged.

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 34 points at 12,401. The index soon plunged to a low of 12,224 - down 211 points from its previous close.
The index has recovered most of its losses and is now down 55 points at 12,380.
The NSE Nifty is down 22 points at 3680.
ICICI Bank has declined over 2% to Rs 646. HDFC Bank and SBI have slipped over 1% each to Rs 859 and Rs 967, respectively. HDFC has dropped 1.5% to Rs 1,368. Gujarat Ambuja and ACC have shed nearly 2% each to Rs 112 and Rs 948, respectively.
Reliance is down 1.8% at Rs 1,089. ONGC is down 1% at Rs 1,443. Tata Steel has surged 2.6% to Rs 655. Hindalco has moved up 1.8% to Rs 248. Ranbaxy has gained 1.8% at Rs 502, and Dr.Reddy's has added 1% to Rs 1,650.
Hero Honda and Tata Motors have advanced over 1% each to Rs 884 and Rs 966, respectively.
NTPC has spurted over 1% to Rs 1,31.
Out of 2,451 stocks traded so far, 1,226 have advanced, 1,157 have advanced and 68 are unchanged.

Gujarat Ambuja has shed 2.7% to Rs 111. ACC has dropped 2% to Rs 947. Reliance has plunged 2% to Rs 1,087. HDFC is down over 1% at Rs 1,373.
ITC, TCS and Bharti Tele are the other prominent losers.
Dr Reddy's, Hero Honda and Hindalco have gained over 1% each at Rs 1,651, Rs 881 and Rs 246, respectively.
The market breadth has turned negative. Out of 2,336 stocks traded so far, 1,206 have declined, 1,071 have declined and the rest are unchanged.
Reliance tops the value chart with a turnover of Rs 117.68 crore followed by Reliance Petro (Rs 64.48 crore), Reliance Communication Ventures (Rs 37.93 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 33.14 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 32.66 crore). Reliance Petro leads the volume chart with trades of around 75.28 lakh shares Lloyd Steel (70 lakh), IFCI (59 lakh), Kamdhenu Ispat (46.58 lakh) and G V Films (28.44 lakh).

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 34 points at 12,401. The index soon plunged to a low of 12,224 - down 211 points from its previous close.
The index has recovered some of its lost ground and is now down 91 points at 12,345.
The NSE Nifty is down 31 points at 3670.
Reliance has dropped 1.7% to Rs 1,090. ONGC is down 1.2% at Rs 1,440.
ICICI Bank has declined 1.5% to Rs 650. HDFC and SBI hve slipped 1% each to Rs 966 and Rs 1,374, respectively.
TCS and Bharti Tele are down 1.3% each to Rs 1,994 and Rs 410, respectively.
Hindalco has gained 2% at Rs 248. Dr Reddy's has rallied 1.6% to Rs 1,658.
The market breadth is marginally positive. Out of 1,872 stocks traded so far, 925 have advanced, 911 have declined and 36 are unchanged.

Reliance has shed 2.7% to Rs 1,079. ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank are down nearly 2% each to Rs 648 and Rs 855, respectively. SBI is down 1.5% at Rs 962.
Gujarat Ambuja has dropped 1.7% to Rs 113, and ACC is down 1.5% at Rs 951.
TCS and Infosys have slipped 1.5% each to Rs 1,990 and Rs 3,205, respectively. Hindalco has bucked the trend and has gained 2.5% at Rs 249.
