Sensex sheds 177 points at close

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 20 points at 12,632. The index spurted to a new all-time intra-day high of 12,671, but soon slipped into the negative zone.

After sliding over 150 points, the index recovered all its losses in intra-day deals but could not move into positive zone. A fresh round of heavy selling towards the close saw the index tumble to a low of 12,397 - down 274 points from the peak.

The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 1.4% (177 points) at 12,435.

Reliance Petro listed at Rs 102, which also happened to be the day's high, as against the issue price of Rs 60 on the BSE. The stock touched a low of Rs 81, and settled at Rs 85 - a premium of 42% (Rs 25) on Day One of its lising. The stock also topped the value and volume charts on the BSE with trades of 7.26 crore shares amounting to Rs 620.37 crore.

Reliance, which zoomed to a high of Rs 1,189 in opening deals, witnessed selling pressure through the day. The stock finally ended with a loss of 5.3% (Rs 62) at Rs 1,109.
