Africa needs Amul, says World Bank

The World Bank has sought cooperation from Amul in poverty alleviation from the African continent through setting up chain of milk cooperatives.

 

In a meeting between a high level delegation from the World Bank led by Praful Patel, Vice President South Asia region on Friday and top team from Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation , a possible role for Amul was discussed in replicating Amul success in African countries.

 

B M Vyas, managing director, GCMMF told Business Standard that the success of Amul in spreading cooperative milk business in African continent and generating much required employment would be the focus of the movement.

 

The World Bank is expected to rope in Amul for a possible drive to use milk cooperatives as an instrument to eradicate poverty from Africa.

 

The delegation led by Patel also had a meeting with Dr V Kurien, chairman of GCMMF and architect of India' milk revolution.

 

GCMMF also discussed a possible financial help from the World Bank in consolidating Amul movement in Gujarat and beyond.

 

Vyas said, in this regard a presentation was made to the world Bank delegation on Amul's plans to set up 8,000 to 10,000 milk chilling centres all over Gujarat state at the cost of around Rs 400 crore (Rs 4 billion).

 

GCMMF also discussed its plans to invest Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) in expansion of Mother Dairy in Gandhinagar.

 

Further during the discussion with the World Bank, GCCMF explored a possibility of getting assistance from it in setting up new dairy plants in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata at the cost of around Rs 140 crore (Rs 1.4 billion).

 

GCMMF also proposed country specific assistance in setting up Amul model of dairy industry as GCMMF is expanding its international presence.

 

GCMMF also had a meeting with the World Bank delegation and explained Amul model and its role in employment generation

 

Amul has assured its cooperation in replicating cooperative movement success among African nations.
