Sensex gains 71 points to 9,521

The Sensex ended with a smart gain of 71 points at 9,521.

The Nifty gained 30 points to close at 2,901.

Heavy buying in the latter half of the trading day at the Maruti counter saw the stock zoom to a high of Rs 712, before settling with a gain of 7% at Rs 707. The counter clocked healthy volume of around 15.86 lakh shares.

HDFC was the other major gainer, the stock surged to a high of Rs 1,258, before closing with a gain of 6% at Rs 1,250. Around 11.18 lakh shares changed hands at the counter.

BHEL rallied 3.5% to close at Rs 1,585. ITC, ONGC and Tata Motors gained around 3% each at Rs 147, Rs 1,240 and Rs 662, respectively.

Bajaj Auto at Rs 2,070 and ICICI Bank at Rs 580 also posted significant gains today.

Bharti Tele at Rs 341 and Larsen & Toubro at Rs 1,865 declined nearly 2% each followed by Ranbaxy down 1% at Rs 383.
