The process of awarding contracts to restructure and modernise airports in Mumbai and Delhi would be completed before January 31, Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said.

"The entire process (of awarding the bids) shall be completed before January 31," he told a gathering at the annual awards function of leading magazine Business India on Wednesday night.

"You know we resolved the long pending Indian Airlines and Air-India deals. . .  the same way restructuring of the airports will be done soon," Patel told reporters at the sidelines of the function.

Over 80 lakh (8 million) people travel by air and this figure is expected to grow ten-fold in the next five to ten years, requiring an investment of $30-40 billion. In such a scenario, good airports were required all over, he said.
