The National Association of Software and Services companies on Wednesday launched the world's first-ever centralised database of IT professionals to further strengthen security in the Indian industry.
The National Skills Registry for IT professionals, which was launched at India-US Information Security Summit 2006 by Union IT minister Dayanidhi Maran in New Delhi, will be a centralised database of information about the employee's professional and educational background.
The NSR, launched in collaboration with the National Securities Depository Limited, has been specifically designed to ensure authenticity of data through independent verification and biometric identification of the individual.

Nasscom is looking at the feasibility of extending a similar registry to employees of the contractors to industry also, thus adding an additional layer of security for the industry.
The NSR will help minimising risk of engaging any employee on the basis of fake/forged documents and will reduce cost and time involved conducting background checks independently.
"The benefit of background check done by any of the Nasscom member companies will be available across the industry. This will facilitate faster completion of HR processes that depend on background checks," Nasscom president Kiran Karnik said, adding that the data is 'owned by the employee,' hence there is no risk of the information being misused. Customers can view information directly only on the employee's consent.
"Let us put our efforts together to safeguard information security, adopt best practices. This conference will go a long way in strengthening the partnership between the United States and India in developing global technology standards," Maran said.
