The presence of Fortune 500 companies will double in Gurgaon to over 40 per cent by 2010 as the city would establish a hub for knowledge economy by then, an Assocham-Deloitte paper said on Tuesday.

With an increasing presence of Fortune 500 companies, Gurgaon will have the potential to employ about 400,000 people by 2010 in sectors like ITeS, automobile manufacturing, banking, textiles, readymade garments and petrochemical, the paper on 'Industrial Prospects of Gurgaon' said.

On an all India basis, the market for software services and ITeS exports are projected to touch Rs 270,000 crore (Rs 2,700 billion) by 2010 from an estimated Rs 54,000 crore (Rs 540 billion) towards the end of 2006, it said.

In 2005, six new large and medium industrial units and 556 small scale industrial units involving an investment of Rs 820 crore (Rs 8.20 billion) have set up shop in Haryana, it added.

It also received investment proposals worth Rs 10,000 crore (Rs 100 billion) including investment assurance of Rs 2,200 crore (Rs 22 billion) from South Korean and Japanese companies, says the paper.

While Suzuki is setting up a diesel engine project, German automaker Volkswagen is also considering investment in Haryana to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore (Rs 15 billion).

Some of the leading Fortune 500 companies which have presence in the state include Microsoft, Alcatel, Wipro, TCS, Flexironics, IBM, Maruti, GENPACT, American Express and the like. Some measures that the state will have to undertake to retain investors interest include massive improvements in its transport and road sector, by improving existing highways and focussing on developing local roads and augmenting freight capacity and passenger transport since Haryana is a land-locked state, the paper said.

The state would also have to improve its industrial infrastructure to provide world-class facilities like ensuring 24 hour potable water, electricity supply and improved civic amenities, besides meeting demands for housing and office space, it added.
